Description: The Salem Cross Inn is a
Colonial restaurant situated on 600 acres of rolling meadows and woodlands
in Central Massachusetts. The original building was constructed by a
grandson of Peregrine White, the first male child born on the Mayflower in
1620. The entire facility is one of the finest examples of Colonial
restoration in the United States, and is listed in the National Register of
Historic Places

Description: A massive, cave-like rock
shelter, exposed after the glacial retreat 10,000 years ago, served as a
winter camp for Native Americans. By mid 1800's, it was part of a farm owned
by William Adams whose descendant, F. A. Carter, dammed a small stream to
create Carter Pond and built the cottage now serving as a trailside museum
and nature center. Open year round, daily, sunrise to sunset. Admission is
free to all.

Description: The Quabbin Visitor Center is
located on the first floor of the MDC Quabbin Administration Building in
Belchertown and is open seven days a week on a year-round basis. With the
exception of the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years holidays, and the
weekend between Christmas and New Years when the Center is closed, normal
Visitor Center hours of operation are 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM. The Center
features exhibits, brochures, books, and videos about Quabbin management and
history. Maps, books, trail guides and related materials are available for
purchase through Visitor Center staff. Vital Records for the disincorporated
towns of Dana, Enfield, Greenwich and Prescott are available on microfiche
for genealogical research, please call ahead to schedule an appointment.

Description: In the early nineteenth
century the land on which Old Sturbridge Village now stands was David
Wight's prosperous farm, including sawmill, gristmill, and well-situated
millpond. In earlier years the land had been wild and rough--the hill behind
the Meetinghouse had once been called Pogus Mountain and known principally
as the home of bears, wolves, and wildcats. Still earlier, at the end of the
last Ice Age, the great glaciers had shaped and scoured the landscape,
leaving ponds, boulders, and subtler traces that Village archaeologists
would find much later. |

| Lake Wickaboag is located
in the town of West Brookfield in central Massachusetts. It is a man made
lake covering approximately 320 acres. Maximum depth is 11 ft with a mean
depth of 7 ft. Lake Wickaboag is heavily used for recreation year round.
There is a public boat ramp near the center of town and there is parking for
a maximum of 7 boat trailers. A town beach permits swimming with a life
guard present during the day in the summer. |

| A unique natural landmark, Purgatory
Chasm runs for a quarter of a mile between granite walls rising as high as
70 feet. Popular with picnickers and rock-climbers alike, the Chasm is
believed to have its origin in the sudden release of dammed-up glacial
meltwater near the end of the last Ice Age, approximately 14,000 years ago. |
